Alaskan Klee Kai

Overview

Alaskan Klee Kai is an energetic and clever breed developed primarily as companion; this spitz-type dog is a power pack of strength and intelligence that closely resembles with Alaskan Husky. Their visual aspect contemplates its northern heritage. Possessive with great concerns towards its human companion, Klee Kais are perfect watchdogs with curious and investigative traits, meanwhile, standoffish and high aggressive to strange dogs they tend to accept only those pets that are grown together from their puppyhood age. They need extremely devoted socialization to keep them in family with young kids. The life of owner would be high demanding due to its self-sufficient attitude. The Klees need heavy grooming.
Bred as companion, Klees are desired to be of small size but the breed is available in three categories, the Toy, Miniature and Standard Klee Kai. The dog is well balanced in boney structure and flesh substance, neither a heavy nor too thin with adequate weight in right proportion to height. The Toy dog would not exceed 13 inches in height with 7 or 8 pounds of weight. Miniature variety would lie between 13 to 15 inches with 15 pounds of average weight. Standard Klee Kai would be at 19 inches of max height with 24 pounds of weight. This breed is well recognized in three color varieties: black and white, red and white and grey and white, some could be of solid white color which is not accepted as standard. The breed is also categorized in standard and full-coated varieties; the major difference is length of their coat. Inquisitive and exploring klee Kai walks in dignified manner with alert expressions.
Linda S. Spurlin and her family from Wasilla, Alaska are credited for the development of this breed in early 1970s. The Klee Kai was resulted from multiple crosses of Siberian and Alaskan Huskies, Schipperkes and American Eskimo Dogs, the great concern was to reduce the breed in size but not to dwarfism. Linda released first dog to public in 1988 that was initially called Klee Kai, which was later adopted as Alaskan Klee Kai in 1995. The breed is in its early developments and is found very rare today. American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) has recognized this breed in 1995, thereafter registered with United Kennel Club in 1997.

Temperament

The Alaskan klee Kai is an intelligent breed, quite self-sufficient yet determinant. Standoffish, curious and cautious Klee is a perfect guardian and watchdog to its family and property. Its disposition is reserved to strangers; a slight aggressive to dogs and no tolerance to cats, this breed needs extensive socialization to be kept with other pets at home. Its temperaments are under the phase of development, the breed is responsive to socialization training yet demanding and somewhat challenge for owner to bring household norms in them.
Induced temperaments of mother-breeds have made the dog much agile in applications besides its cause of development as companion. They posses strong prey drive to hunt small animals and can chase vigorously. Although much rigorous, they can be domesticated to live with children who know the rules of dog handling. These dogs have low tolerance when mistreated by young kids, therefore never trust them with young toddlers. To adopt good norms, supervise and help Klees while at play in yard, ensure adequate exercises for better physical fitness.
The breed is continual shedder round the year, further it blows its coat twice in a year, it needs daily upkeep and brushing for its grooming, however easy to maintain. The Klees are odor free and clean dogs. Longer coat variant should be brushed regularly to avoid possible matting. When bonding with family, the owner should care about nail trimming to reduce risk of injuries to children.
